Description
The Basilica of Saint Mary Magdalene in Saint-Maximin la Saint Baume is the largest Gothic edifice in Frances' south-East. (73 metres long, 37 metres wide and 29 metres high) Charles II of Anjou decided on the building of the Basilica on the original sight of a crypt dating back to the fourth century AD holding the relics of Saint Mary Magdelene and others including Saint Maximin. The work began in 1295 and continued for 300 years until funds ran out in the 16th century. The main portal remains unfinished and the clock tower was never built. The sacred Crypt of Saint Mary Magdelene has been a place of pilgrimage through out the ages.
